So it all came to pass when computer wizards tried to send the first command line between The University of California and Stanford Research Institute… that command was the word, ‘LOGIN’! However, the transmission was received in part showing the first two letters only. Some took this to be an epiphany from the old English word ‘Lo’ (to look) as in, lo and behold …we, however, prefer our version based on the British greeting as, ‘ello or that classic catchphrase, ‘ello, ‘ello, 'ello...??? Quite apt really, considering we are still getting to grips with this technological revolution.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee founded the hypertext language, which when integrated with the internet would become the cornerstone of what we all know to be the World Wide Web today.

Like it or loathe it, this invention has turned the vastness of our planet into a village! While you marvel at the technical intricacies of the first ever web page , remember that all great things begin by looking really simple.

We feel compelled to celebrate this day with our followers, otherwise how else would you know about our funky selves??? ��

William Wilberforce did not set out to gather a strategic band of comrades to strengthen his cause. It came together because of the kind of man he was and the compelling vision he had of what a public Christian life should be. He had a deep “love of conversation and could hardly resist prolonging a chat and kept many late hours leaving the mornings to less important things.” This love of company and great capacity for friendship combined with the power of his vision for public righteousness to attract “the Saints.” Together they accomplished more than any could have done on his own. “William Wilberforce is proof that a man can change his times, though he cannot do it alone.”

William Wilberforce died just three days after hearing that the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, which abolished slavery in the British Empire, was assured. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.

I’m on a plane, sometime mid eighties, London bound. I was a kid, plucked from the sandy shores of Freetown and headed to a new world … a cold one with no coconut trees !!!

Whilst sat alone, a small commotion amongst fellow passengers could be heard … BUNNY MACK, BUNNY MACK …everybody vying for conversation with the then disco king. Making his way past, he looked across, stopped and asked where I was headed? A brief exchange of details, he flashed a smile, told me to work hard and ‘tɛl papa awdu’ (say hi to dad). The six hour outbound trip suddenly felt better…

Fast forward 33 years or so; I return the favour with a little tribute to his sound and memory…

We are humbled!!!

THE WORLD IS MESSED UP!

Artisans in Freetown were descendants of repatriated slaves during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; its society one in which western cultural symbols and notions of equality, liberty, the rights of man and a Christian sense of justice pre-dominated.

Artisan society employed what they knew best, their cultural heritage, in protecting their interests. And like artisans elsewhere, they interpreted these notions from the point of view of their class interests.

Most artisans worked for government and individual contractors, particularly those in the building trade such as masons, carpenters and painters. Others, notably shoemakers, blacksmiths and tailors, operated independently, though in certain instances they accepted subcontracting. Whereas some master artisans in the building and construction industries employed more labour, the majority relied on the labour of their apprentices.

The establishment of The Artisan in 1884 as a journal committed 'to advance' the cause of a 'class hitherto much neglected and downtrodden' of class relations in late nineteenth-century Freetown. For the first time in the settlement, a journal was born which explicitly proclaimed its goals on behalf of a class. It criticised state officials for attributing the fall in wages to the depression; condemned the alliance between the state and the mercantile firms; and called for a genuine representation of the people.

Several artisans such as goldsmiths, tailors, shoemakers, cabinet-makers, undertakers and carpenters, were ranked among the elite of Sierra Leone during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; Thus, families who could not afford to educate their children in Britain, could apprentice them to a local artisan who would prepare them for a local occupation, which was economically beneficial and furthermore was in some cases deemed to be equally prestigious.
